When Cialis® launched, Viagra® was the only oral ED medication on the market. Rather than competing head-to-head on onset speed, Cialis® carved out a distinct position with its dramatically longer duration — up to 36 hours from a single dose.
The ‘weekend pill’ positioning was not marketing spin. It genuinely reflected a clinical advantage: one dose taken on Friday evening remained effective through Sunday. For men and their partners, this meant intimacy no longer had to be scheduled around a pill's onset window.
Cialis® also pioneered the daily low-dose approach — 2.5-5 mg taken every day — which no other ED medication offered at the time. Daily dosing allowed men to maintain continuous readiness without planning around individual doses, effectively removing timing from the equation altogether.
Generic tadalafil is bioequivalent to Cialis® and is 80-90% less expensive. Patients choose brand-name Cialis® for trust in the Eli Lilly name, familiarity, or personal preference. The clinical outcome is the same.
Cialis® is a PDE5 inhibitor. It blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, allowing cGMP to accumulate in the erectile tissue, relaxing smooth muscle and increasing blood flow when you are sexually aroused. Like Viagra®, it works with sexual stimulation — not on its own.
What sets Cialis® apart is its half-life. Tadalafil is metabolized far more slowly than sildenafil, remaining at therapeutic levels for up to 36 hours from a single as-needed dose. That is why Cialis® is prescribed as either of two distinct approaches.
As-needed dosing: take 10-20 mg approximately 30 minutes before planned sexual activity. Do not take more than one dose in 36 hours. Effects last up to 36 hours.
Daily low-dose: take 2.5-5 mg at roughly the same time every day. After a few days of steady dosing, therapeutic levels are continuous and no timing is needed before intimacy.
A practical advantage over sildenafil: food has minimal impact on tadalafil absorption. Cialis® can be taken with or without a meal without meaningfully changing onset or effect.
Brand-name Cialis® is priced significantly higher than generic tadalafil. Both contain the same active ingredient at the same strengths and produce the same clinical effect. Your provider and pharmacy confirm final cost before you fill.
Cialis® vs. Viagra®: different active ingredients, very different durations. Cialis® (tadalafil) lasts up to 36 hours and offers a daily low-dose option. Viagra® (sildenafil) works in 30-60 minutes and lasts 4-6 hours. Cialis® is better for extended spontaneity; Viagra® is better for a defined planned window. Neither is universally better.
Cialis® vs. generic tadalafil: pharmacologically identical. Generic tadalafil is bioequivalent and 80-90% less expensive. Most patients choose the generic; brand-name is a preference, not a clinical upgrade.

Same active ingredient, same clinical effect. Some patients prefer brand-name Cialis® for trust in Eli Lilly's manufacturing or familiarity with the name. Generic tadalafil is 80-90% less expensive. Most patients choose the generic; brand-name is a personal preference, not a clinical difference.
Daily low-dose tadalafil (2.5-5 mg) has been studied in long-term use and is FDA-approved for daily administration. Your provider monitors you on an ongoing basis to confirm the medication continues to be appropriate and well tolerated. Millions of men take it daily without issue when prescribed correctly.
No. Never combine PDE5 inhibitors. Taking two at once dramatically increases the risk of dangerously low blood pressure and other side effects with no additional benefit. Your provider prescribes one or the other based on your needs, and can switch you between them safely if a change is warranted.
Cialis® is not FDA-approved for premature ejaculation, but some clinical studies suggest tadalafil may have a modest effect on ejaculatory control in men who also have erectile dysfunction. If PE is your primary concern, discuss dedicated PE treatments with your provider — PE-specific therapies are more directly effective.
They are completely unrelated. Cialis® treats erectile dysfunction. GLP-1 medications like Zepbound® treat obesity and metabolic disease. Different conditions, different mechanisms, different medications. It is not uncommon for a patient to receive both if clinically appropriate, but they do not overlap.
Different, not better. Cialis® offers a longer duration and daily dosing option; Viagra® has a faster onset within a defined window. Which is better for you depends on how you plan to use it.
Moderate alcohol is generally acceptable. Heavy drinking reduces effectiveness and increases the risk of dizziness and low blood pressure.
It does not mean a 36-hour erection. It means a 36-hour window during which achieving an erection is easier when sexually aroused. Erections still occur only with stimulation and subside naturally.
Yes. Eli Lilly developed and continues to manufacture brand-name Cialis®.
No. Your provider prescribes one approach — either as-needed or daily. You can switch between them, but you should never combine both strategies simultaneously.
