Mechanism

Two appetite-regulating pathways

Tirzepatide targets GIP and GLP-1 receptors to help curb hunger and support weight loss.

How Zepbound works infographic
  1. Inject once weekly

The KwikPen® delivers tirzepatide under the skin — one dose each week, four doses per pen.

  2. Activates GIP + GLP-1 receptors

Two incretin pathways involved in appetite, fullness, and how the body handles food.

  3. Helps you feel fuller faster and longer

Digestion slows and hunger signals quiet, so smaller portions feel natural.

  4. Supports weight loss with diet and exercise

Alongside a reduced-calorie eating pattern and increased physical activity.

Clinical evidence

Clinically proven weight-loss support

20.9% average body-weight reduction at 15 mg in a 72-week trial (average starting weight about 231 lb), versus 3.1% with placebo. Individual results vary, and your provider chooses your dose based on response and tolerability.

*Average 20.9% body weight loss at 72 weeks on the 15 mg dose, versus 3.1% for placebo, based on the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial in adults with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary; no specific outcome is guaranteed.

Dosing

A gradual, provider-guided schedule.

Zepbound® starts low and steps up no faster than every four weeks. Each KwikPen® is labeled for one dose strength — your provider prescribes the next strength when it's time to step up.

Using your KwikPen®

How the KwikPen® works

A six-stage routine, once a week. Your provider walks you through the first injection, and the Instructions for Use stay with your pen.

Zepbound KwikPen with dial window and 15 mg per dose label
  1. Step 1

    Prepare

Wash your hands, check the label and expiration date, and confirm the medicine is clear and colorless to slightly yellow.

  2. Step 2

    Attach needle

Pull off the pen cap, wipe the rubber seal, and screw a new pen needle straight on. Remove both needle shields.

  3. Step 3

    Prime

Turn the dose knob to the prime symbol, hold the pen with the needle up, and press the dose button until you see medicine at the tip.

  4. Step 4

    Choose site

Stomach (at least 2 inches from the navel), thigh, or back of the upper arm. Rotate sites each week.

  5. Step 5

    Dial + inject

Dial to 1 for a full dose. Insert the needle, press and hold the dose button, and count slowly to 5 after the dial returns to 0.

  6. Step 6

    Remove + store

Remove and discard the needle in a sharps container. Recap the pen and store it in the refrigerator between doses.

Four device rules

  • Use a new pen needle for every weekly injection.
  • Never share your KwikPen® or needles with anyone else, even if the needle is changed.
  • Do not use any leftover medicine after your fourth dose.
  • Discard the pen 30 days after first use or after 4 doses, whichever comes first.

Severe gastrointestinal reactions

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can be severe, especially during dose increases. Tell your provider if symptoms don't ease.

Acute kidney injury

Vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration and worsen kidney function; stay hydrated.

Gallbladder disease

Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation have been reported; watch for upper-abdominal pain, fever, or yellowing of the skin.

Pancreatitis

Stop use and seek care for severe, persistent abdominal pain, with or without vomiting, that may radiate to the back.

Hypoglycemia

Risk is higher when used with insulin or sulfonylureas; know the signs of low blood sugar.

Severe allergic reactions

Stop use and get emergency help for swelling, trouble breathing, rapid heartbeat, or severe rash.

Pregnancy & medication interactions

Do not use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Tirzepatide may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives around dose increases — talk to your provider. Also report depression or suicidal thoughts and every medication you take.

Common side effects

Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, injection-site reactions, fatigue, and decreased appetite.

Provider-guided

A short checklist before your first injection.

Your provider reviews your BMI and weight-related conditions, personal and family thyroid history, pancreatitis and gallbladder history, kidney function, current medications, pregnancy plans, and walks you through the KwikPen® Instructions for Use.
