One dose, a weekend-long window — no planning around a pill.

A single as-needed dose of Cialis® can remain effective for up to 36 hours, and the daily low-dose option removes timing from the equation entirely. Sexual stimulation is still required, and individual response varies.

What the medication is, how it works, and why the timing sets it apart.
Cialis® is Eli Lilly's brand-name tadalafil, an FDA-approved PDE5 inhibitor for erectile dysfunction — available as-needed or as a low daily dose.
It blocks the PDE5 enzyme so cGMP accumulates in erectile tissue, smooth muscle relaxes, and blood flow increases when you are sexually aroused.
Generic tadalafil is bioequivalent and 80-90% less expensive. Patients choose brand-name Cialis® for trust in the Eli Lilly name or preference — the clinical outcome is the same.
The longest-window brand-name PDE5 option, in four steps.

Like Viagra®, Cialis® works with sexual stimulation — not on its own.
Take the dose your provider prescribed. As-needed doses are taken about 30 minutes before activity; daily doses are taken at the same time each day.
PDE5 is inhibited. Cialis® blocks the PDE5 enzyme in the smooth muscle of erectile tissue.
cGMP activity is supported. With PDE5 suppressed, cGMP accumulates and blood vessels relax.
Blood flow responds to stimulation. During sexual arousal, blood flows into erectile tissue and an erection becomes easier to achieve and maintain.
Tadalafil is metabolized slowly and remains at therapeutic levels for up to 36 hours from a single as-needed dose. Food has minimal impact on absorption.
Cialis® and generic tadalafil are pharmacologically identical; the difference is branding and price.

Up to 36 hours
Works within about 30 minutes and offers a daily low-dose option. Food has minimal impact. Better for extended spontaneity.
Longer windowAbout 4-6 hours
Works in 30-60 minutes within a defined window. A high-fat meal may delay onset. Better for a planned encounter.
Defined windowDosing, safety, timing, and practical answers in one place.
Both approaches are available, and your provider prescribes one — never both at the same time.
As-needed dosing: take 10-20 mg approximately 30 minutes before planned sexual activity. Do not take more than one dose in 36 hours. Effects last up to 36 hours.
Daily low-dose: take 2.5-5 mg at roughly the same time every day. After a few days of steady dosing, therapeutic levels are continuous and no timing is needed before intimacy.
Food has minimal impact on tadalafil absorption, so Cialis® can be taken with or without a meal without meaningfully changing onset or effect. You can switch between approaches with your provider, but you should never combine both strategies simultaneously.
Tell your provider about heart conditions, blood pressure medications, liver or kidney disease, alpha-blockers, any history of priapism, and all current prescriptions during your assessment. Never take Cialis® alongside another PDE5 inhibitor, and do not combine daily and as-needed dosing.
A provider should review your cardiovascular health, blood pressure, and current medications before prescribing. Sexual activity carries cardiac considerations for some patients, which is part of the clinical review.
Common side effects include headache, back pain, muscle aches, flushing, nasal congestion, and upset stomach. Seek emergency care for an erection lasting more than 4 hours. Sudden vision or hearing loss also requires prompt medical attention.
Moderate alcohol is generally acceptable. Heavy drinking reduces effectiveness and increases the risk of dizziness and low blood pressure.
Cialis® supports the normal erectile response to arousal; sexual stimulation is still required, and it does not automatically cause an erection.
Cialis® is one option. Treatment selection should reflect your medical history, previous response, timing preferences, and goals.
