Sildenafil Overview

Understand sildenafil in three cards.

What the medication is, how it works, and why many men choose the generic.

What is sildenafil?

Sildenafil is a prescription PDE5 inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is the active ingredient in Viagra® and is available as an FDA-approved generic.

How does it work?

It relaxes smooth muscle and supports blood flow to erectile tissue during sexual stimulation — supporting your natural response rather than replacing it.

Why choose the generic?

Generic sildenafil is required to be bioequivalent to the brand-name reference product: the same active ingredient and strengths, typically at a far lower cost.

How It Works

How sildenafil supports your natural response.

A trusted prescription option for erectile dysfunction, in four steps.

Four steps, one pathway

Sildenafil works with the body's normal erectile mechanism — it does not create arousal on its own.

  • Take the dose your provider prescribed. Typically 30–60 minutes before anticipated activity, on an empty or light stomach.

  • PDE5 is inhibited. Sildenafil blocks the PDE5 enzyme in the smooth muscle of erectile tissue.

  • cGMP activity is supported. With PDE5 suppressed, cGMP accumulates and blood vessels relax.

  • Blood flow responds to stimulation. During sexual arousal, blood flows into erectile tissue and an erection becomes easier to achieve and maintain.

Effects generally last about 4 to 6 hours. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours unless directed by your provider.

Generic vs. Brand

Same active ingredient. A more cost-conscious option.

Sildenafil and Viagra® share the same active ingredient; the difference is branding and price.

01

Sildenafil (generic)

25mg · 50mg · 100mg

FDA-approved generic containing sildenafil citrate. Required to demonstrate bioequivalence to the brand-name reference product, and typically dispensed as a plain, unbranded tablet.

Viagra® (brand)

25mg · 50mg · 100mg

The brand-name reference product from Pfizer. Same active ingredient, same standard strengths, with brand-name pricing and packaging.

Strengths & Dosing

Three standard strengths. One personalized prescription.

Your provider selects the starting strength and adjusts based on how you respond.

  1. 25mg

A lower starting strength that may be selected based on age, medications, or sensitivity to side effects.

  2. 50mg

The most common starting strength for men beginning treatment for erectile dysfunction.

  3. 100mg

The maximum standard strength, prescribed when a provider determines a higher dose is appropriate.

How to Take Sildenafil

Simple to take. Prescribed for you.

Always take sildenafil exactly as prescribed.

  1. Take about 30–60 minutes before activity.

A heavy, high-fat meal can delay onset. A light meal or empty stomach works best.

  2. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Do not split or double a dose to try to increase the effect.

  3. No more than one dose in 24 hours.

Contact your provider if the dose does not work as expected instead of taking more.

Care That Feels Personal

Effective ED care should still feel personal.

Sildenafil is a well-established medication, but treatment is more than a tablet. Graceland Wellness pairs it with provider review, private telehealth, and follow-up support built around how you actually live.

Trusted Prescription Care

Feel more ready for intimate moments.

Four things stay true of every sildenafil prescription.

  • FDA-approved medication. Sildenafil is an FDA-approved generic of the brand-name reference product, dispensed by licensed pharmacies.

  • Provider evaluated. A licensed clinician reviews your history, cardiovascular health, and medications before anything is prescribed.

  • Private telehealth process. Assessment, review, and follow-up happen online, on your schedule.

  • Discreet fulfillment when prescribed. If treatment is appropriate, it ships directly to your door in plain packaging.

Medication and health review matter.

Tell your provider about heart conditions, blood pressure issues, liver or kidney disease, riociguat use, alpha-blockers, and any history of priapism.

Sexual stimulation is still required.

Sildenafil supports the normal erectile response to arousal; it does not automatically cause an erection.

Common side effects.

Headache, flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion, dizziness, and temporary changes in vision such as a blue tinge or light sensitivity.

Know when to seek urgent care.

Seek emergency care for an erection lasting more than 4 hours. Sudden vision or hearing loss also requires prompt medical attention.

One dose per 24 hours.

Do not exceed the prescribed frequency or combine sildenafil with other ED medications.
